CMSR Solar Racing Boat
Carnegie Mellon Solar Racing Team, Fall 2016
New member competition for Fall 2016 semester.
As a new member of the Carnegie Mellon Solar Racing team, I worked in a team of 5 along with a mentor to build a miniature version of the fiberglass boat used for competitions. Over the course of a semester, we learned the fabrication methods used to design and build the boat. Our team created a model of the hull in AutoCAD, then created a plaster mold using foam cross sections. We then used several layers of fiberglass layups to create the body. All 4 new member projects competed for the fastest time to complete 2 laps around a pool.
Foam cross sections used to create the mold for the hull. Once the glue dried, we sanded the foam to create a smooth body that could be used for the plaster mold.
Completed new member projects. Our team’s design is on the right.
Preparing for the new member competition.
